Mail Order Housewives Movie on TV

Hello all,

I just received the following e-mail from Diana. Please click on the photos to for more information. Have any of you seen/heard of this show? Any suggestions on how to get this off the air?! Also, let's start up some conversation again. Hope to hear from you all soon:)

Dear all,

I saw something very disturbing on tv just about 30 minutes ago. My friend and I were watching the TV guide channel trying to decide what to watch. And then something disturbing caught my eye- "Mail Order Housewives: Philippines". I do not know what the movie was about but I can very well guess. If you would like you could either search for it or you can look at the screenshots I have attached. I do not know what exactly can be done- I'm thinking at least a letter campaign or something to OnDemand because I do not think that this should be allowed. I am so angry and yet I feel so upset because these kinds of things hit you like a surprise on the head. At least I am letting you all know and maybe we can decide what to do or you could let me know what would be a good course of action. I cannot take this sitting down.

Sincerely,
Diana Halog

hey all, i think we should help diana with a petition and the letter-writing. there's something utterly sinister about the conjoining of the tv porn industry and the mail-order-bride industry, and even if our actions end up doing nothing, i think it's important to do something in this case. whoever heard of being able to buy the actresses of the porn film you just watched?

this film might just some kind of advertisement for the whole mail-order-bride industry, but it seems implicit that you can "order" one of the participants in the show if you want to. are there any precedents for this? there should be some laws against human trafficking that apply here.

I agree; let's help in Diana's effort. I don't want to be one of those groups, though, that protests without having seen the actual piece being protested. Unfortunately, I also don't want to watch the shit. How to get around this?

I'm wondering now if this is some sort of series (i.e. that it showcases women from other countries with large mail-order bride industries)?

Anyone want to suggest next steps? I'm not too versed in heading up something like this.

I am going to post this to Gabriela and my other listserves and some of my mail-order bride friends who would be offended by this. Let's get the word out. If you google this, you will see that this is available on several media outlets at $15. How do we target all of them?

I think it will be important to try to get other groups involved in the protest. YWCA is the first that comes to mind - basically groups already involved in the elimination of racism and empowerment of women.

I agree, though, that it will be important to somehow 'view' the movie prior to make some sort of informed message. Although it could be argued that the advertising itself is offensive and indicative of a pervasive social problem.

At some point too, we should try and figure out how to make the media work for us - somehow get the word to The View and Oprah etc., although they're at the end of their season.

Is anyone forming a press release at this point?

Hi, I'm in favor of good people meeting from different countries. People who are pen pals or chat online can form healthy relationships. However, there are many cases of dishonesty in this form of dating, just like in traditional dating.

There is no sure way to find the so-called "right person", but people keep trying because most people want a relationship.

I like your blog because you challenge our thinking on this subject.

In my opinion, dating online works for lots of people because there are lots of men and women who are just too shy to start conversations in a social setting. Others don't have the time to go on lots of dates. Still others want to meet people in other countries.

While some people may have hidden agendas, most of them are good, kind individuals.
